On September 14, 2021, Springer Nature, a globally renowned academic publisher, announced the awarding of the "China New Development Award" to 10 English academic books and held a ceremony in Beijing to honor Chinese scholars for their significant research contributions to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Tuberculosis Control and Prevention Among Floating Populations, co-edited by Professor Lu Puxuan, Editor-in-Chief of the Electronic Journal of Emerging Infectious Diseases (EJEID), received the 2021 Springer Nature: China New Development Award and was invited to deliver a speech at the ceremony.
Launched in 2019, the award’s selection committee comprises in-house editors and sustainability project leaders at Springer Nature, evaluating submissions based on scientific value and social impact. This year’s winners were chosen from nearly 820 books and conference proceedings published by Springer and Palgrave Macmillan in 2020, spanning diverse fields: education policy, water quality research, process engineering, rural restructuring, wind energy sustainability, tuberculosis control, Sino-US trade studies, and global perspectives on China’s economic rise. Professor Lu’s Tuberculosis Control and Prevention Among Floating Populations was the only medical 著作 (medical work) among the awardees.
Tuberculosis, discovered in 1882, remains a global public health threat. According to WHO’s 2020 Global Tuberculosis Report, 10 million people fell ill with TB in 2019, with tuberculosis among floating populations identified as one of the three major challenges in TB control. The book addresses this strategic issue through systematic research, proposing:
-
A tailored TB control strategy for floating populations;
-
An innovative prevention and management model;
-
A comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system to support effective TB control.
It aims to share China’s experience and contribute to achieving the global goal of ending TB by 2035.
Founded by Professor Lu in November 2016, EJEID is China’s only medical journal dedicated to emerging infectious diseases. Over four years, it has focused on improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of emerging pathogens (e.g., COVID-19), publishing original research on global first cases and 防控策略 (prevention strategies). Notable initiatives include:
-
Hosting themed columns on major infectious disease control, such as "70 Years of New China: Major Infectious Disease Prevention" and "National Health for a Moderately Prosperous Society," featuring contributions from 2 Nobel laureates and 6 academicians;
-
The article Eliminating Congenital Syphilis: China’s Journey and Achievements was selected for the National Health Commission’s outstanding works compilation;
-
Awarded the "Exemplary Journal for Epidemic Prevention and Control."
In 2020, after rigorous evaluation of academic metrics and peer reviews, EJEID was indexed as a China Science and Technology Core Journal (China’s statistical source for scientific papers). The journal continues to prioritize high-quality research, 前沿方向 (frontier trends), and international academic exchange to advance China’s capabilities in emerging infectious disease control and treatment.
